Written by Dr Vince Cable MP, Deputy Leader and Shadow Chancellor on Mon 21st Sep 2009

"If there were ever a time for the Liberal Democrats, this is it," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor.

The Budget

Written by Colin Breed on Tue 21st Apr 2009

Parliament returns from Easter recess this week and it is straight down to business with the Budget, which the Government has left to the latest possible date in the hope that some of its financial crisis measures will have been demonstrated as working. At the time of writing, precise facts are not known, but much speculation abounds as to what the Government will propose to free up the banking system and stimulate stagnant growth without creating an unsustainable future burden of borrowing. It would appear long term financial stability is of less importance than short term political survival. With this is mind, I do not expect significant future plans but a few token gestures, such as "green" measures to raise revenue under the guise of environmental protection, which in reality will have more to do with filling the ever growing black hole of public debt than achieving our 2020 carbon targets. Real revenue will be delayed until 2010 and beyond, after the next election!!

Tax Proposals

Written by Dr. Vincent Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor and published in House Magazine on Tue 22nd Aug 2006

Tax is important, politically. In the otherwise abstract world of political slogans and 'isms, tax consistently brings home to voters in simple cash terms what parties stand for and what they will cost to elect.

Energy Review

Written by Ed Davey MP - Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and published in Parliamentary Monitor on Fri 7th Jul 2006

1. Do you think the government's decision to support a new nuclear regime was made long before the energy review was due?

Globalisation

Written by Sajjad Karim MEP is Parliament's Rapporteur on EU-India Economic and Trade Relations and published in New Europe on Tue 13th Jun 2006

The consolidation of one of the chief industries fuelling globalisation has been reduced to a bitter fight in a tiny corner of Europe. News that Arcelor's latest defensive move against Indian-origin entrepreneur, Lakshmi Mittal is to try to ram through a merger with Russian steel mogul, Alexei Mordachov's Severstal, has taken many by surprise. In playing favourites over the jewel in the nation's corporate crown, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has become "the mouse that roared."

Manufacturing in Britain

Written by Ed Davey MP - Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and published in Parliamentary Monitor on Fri 26th May 2006

Despite encouraging quarterly statistics and some signs that manufacturing is anticipating a revival with industrial production growing at its fastest pace for six years, the long term trend is far less buoyant. Manufacturing as a share of national income, and Britain's share in world production of manufactured goods is on a long decline. How should Government respond?

Economic Stability - The Golden Rule

Written by Dr. Vincent Cable MP - Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and published in Parliamentary Monitor on Sat 20th Aug 2005

This year has been dominated by Gordon Brown's "will he, won't he" struggle to meet his self-imposed Golden Rule, culminating in several attempts to move the goalposts. Redefining the economic cycle to accommodate the deficit is simply to undermine the credibility of the Rule. The Rule was based on a fairly simple premise and for several years, it appeared that it was working. It now appears that one of the cornerstones of the Rule has been flouted by the Chancellor: borrowing only to invest, not spend.

G8

Written by Dr. Vincent Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and published in House Magazine on Wed 1st Jun 2005

It is gratifying, even a source of some pride, that the UK has taken a lead within the G8 on issues of debt relief and aid and, through the African Commission, is spearheading the international effort to mobilise external support for African development.

Article for Personnel Today

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Personnel Today on Tue 29th Mar 2005

In recent weeks the Liberal Democrats have published a Business Manifesto and a policy paper on workplace rights.

Malcolm Bruce looks at the problem of red tape faced by business

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP on Mon 21st Mar 2005

I read recently that complaining about red tape was becoming the business equivalent of complaining about the weather. The difference is red tape is not an act of nature, it's an act of Government.

Corporate Social Responsibility- The Liberal Democrat Approach

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP on Thu 3rd Feb 2005

The economist Milton Friedman declared that the 'one and only social responsibility of business is to make profits'. Does this assertion still stand today?

Liberal Democrat Proposals for the Department of Trade and Industry

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Whitehall and Westminster Magazine on Mon 3rd Jan 2005

The Liberal Democrats are instinctively a pro-business party. We believe that business is best placed to deliver prosperity when it is freed from excessive regulation, unhelpful state interference, and the distorting effects of government subsidies. More than two decades after it was established it is clear that the role for which the Department of Trade and Industry was created doesn't exist any more.

Does the UK need the DTI?

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Trade House Magazine on Thu 25th Nov 2004

It may not be the workshop of the world anymore, but the UK has managed to maintain a position as a major trading nation in the global market.

Post Offices

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP on Tue 23rd Nov 2004

Ask a person on the street whether they use their post office regularly and they may say no. Ask them whether they would fight to keep their local post office open and I am confident they will say yes, even if they find it hard to explain why.

The Case against Nuclear Power

Written by Andrew Stunnell MP, Shadow Energy Spokesman on Tue 16th Nov 2004

Fifty years ago nuclear was going to produce electricity too cheap to meter. Now, three expensive generations of power plant later, it needed a £600 million bail-out to save the last private sector producer, and taxpayers will spend £50,000 million on cleaning up the mess. That's a 60 year job, employing more people than the production phase did. In the harsh world of market forces, risk assessments and business cases, no investor will touch it. No wonder the industry is glum.

Conserving the Future - and Exploding the Myths

Written by Andrew Stunnell MP, Shadow Energy Spokesman and published in Power UK on Wed 6th Oct 2004

The Liberal Democrats' new energy policy document 'Conserving the Future', passed at this year's Party Conference sets out not only the objectives of a sound energy policy, but also the timescales and the mechanisms for delivering it.

The Disability Discrimination Act

Written by Brian Cotter MP, Shadow Small Business Minister and published in Professional Manager on Wed 1st Sep 2004

From the 1st October, small businesses will have a new legal duty to make reasonable adjustments to their premises in order to accommodate any disabled employees. Firms with less than 15 employees have, until now, been exempt from the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act, but following an amendment to the law, all employers will be required to change building features or work equipment, which restrict disabled staff in their work.

Improving Industrial Relations

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Inbusiness Website on Wed 4th Aug 2004

On any occasion that Industrial Relations legislation is mentioned we can expect predictable and polarised views: Employers organisations will bemoan the increase in bureaucracy and 'red tape' and Trade Unions will proclaim that the particular measure does not go far enough.

The New Discrimination Battlegrounds

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Inbusiness Website on Wed 28th Jul 2004

The women currently making headlines for their high profile lawsuits against City investment banks may not think they have much in common with UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom, but the fact is both have brought the debate about workplace discrimination back to the fore of political debate.

Research

Written by Malcolm Bruce MP and published in Science Parliamentary Monitor on Wed 7th Jul 2004

At the heart of a successful economy is a belief that performance today matters only as much as what is invested for tomorrow.
