AVEBURY URGES SUPPORT FOR COMPUTER CHARITY

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 4th Jun 2003

Liberal Democrat Peer Lord (Eric) Avebury, speaking at the relaunch of Computer Aid International in Westminster today, said:

"A million and a half computers are being dumped in landfill sites every year, and another million and a half end up in storage because people don't know what to do with them. "

"With the EU directive on disposal of electronic goods in the offing, companies should consider the reuse of their redundant machines. Third World users are still pleased to have old Pentium computers, and this also helps to reduce the number we need to recycle. The Government must encourage this process."
