Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has congratulated the Prime Minister and Chancellor for agreeing actively to make the case for British participation in the Euro.

He said:

'This is an important shift of emphasis. The two men at the top have to set the course and if they are united and rowing in the same direction, I'm delighted. The discussion now has to be engaged properly and persuasively with the British public.

Of course it's important that the economic tests are met, but it's also important that the argument is actively and effectively put to the British public. It is time to make the case and take on those who are anti-European.

We've lost six years while the Prime Minister and the Chancellor dithered. Now let's put the 'soap opera' of their personal differences behind us and get on with the substance of this vitally important debate.'
