'Big Three' Polluters Must Sign Up to Kyoto - Baker

5.12.24pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Aug 2003

Responding to the Institute for Public Policy Research Report, 'New Economy: Beyond Kyoto', which says the Kyoto approach to climate change is 'flawed', Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"Kyoto is not perfect and needs to go further, but it is a necessary first step in the fight against global climate change."

"It is time for the 'big three' - the US, Russia and Australia - to sign up to the agreement. They must look at the long-term global picture, not their own short-term gains."

"If the American way of life is to use more than their fair share of the world's resources, then that way of life has to change now."
