Pensions Minister's Regulation Call Is A Load Of Old Cockles - Oakeshott

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 8th Aug 2003

Lord (Matthew) Oakeshott, Liberal Democrat Pensions Policy Spokesman, today said that Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks should put solving Britain's pensions crisis ahead of "silly season stunts" such as proposing more Government regulation of cockle-catching.

Lord Oakeshott said: "Malcolm Wicks, the sixth Pensions Minister in six years, has been in his new job for barely a month. He should tackle the pensions crisis at the top of his in-tray, and stop silly season stunts such as proposing more Government regulation of cockle catching."

"Yesterday, independent surveys showed nearly half of working British people save nothing towards a pension and our major pension funds in massive deficit. Ministers - especially the Pensions Minister - should stop spinning and start solving the pensions crisis."
