Manufacturing Flatlines As Orders And Output Stagnate

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 18th Sep 2003

Responding to the CBI's Monthly Industrial Trends Survey which shows manufacturing orders falling back and output remaining flat, Matthew Taylor MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said:

"The optimism of last month's green shoots has been quashed by the fall in manufacturing orders."

"While employment in the service sector rises, manufacturing jobs are haemorrhaging. Lending is booming, but manufacturing flatlines."

"The imbalanced economy is causing a severe headache for Brown and the Bank of England, but the pain is most greatly felt by the 133,000 who have lost their jobs in the manufacturing sector in the last year."
