Nuclear Energy Decommissioning? No One Knows The Cost - Stunell

11.43.16am GMT Wed 29th Oct 2003

The exact cost of decommissioning Britain's nuclear sites is unknown, according to the Trade and Industry Select Committee.

Members of the Committee will today warn that plans for a Nuclear Decommissioning Authority need a 'fuller estimate of costs.'

Commenting on the issue, Andrew Stunell MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy Secretary said: "The Select Committee's report underlines Liberal Democrat fears that nuclear power is an uncosted luxury we cannot afford, and do not need."

"The cost of putting right the environmental blunders of the nuclear industry will be greater than the cost of building it in the first place."

"There is no case for a new generation of nuclear power in the United Kingdom."
