£700m overpayments show shambolic introduction of tax credits

Commenting on the National Audit Office report today showing the Inland Revenue has been wrongly paying out £700 million-a-year in tax credits, Steve Webb MP, Liberal Democrat shadow Work & Pensions Secretary, said:

"This is yet more evidence of the Government's shambolic introduction of tax credits.

"It demonstrates a total breakdown in the control of public spending.

"Someone has to take responsibility for the misuse of taxpayers money."
