Manufacturing Output Falling: Bank Of England Cannot Solve Problem Alone - Cable

12.00.00am GMT Tue 13th Jan 2004

Reacting to this morning's index of production showing manufacturing output falling, Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said: "With 750,000 jobs lost in manufacturing since 1997 people are justifiably anxious about their jobs."

"Today's figures show that the economy continues to be fundamentally imbalanced. Britain's twin problems of runaway consumer spending and weak manufacturing cannot be resolved by the Bank of England alone."
