Vocational Courses Essential In Creating Employable Workforce

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 3rd Feb 2004

Commenting on today's comments by CBI director Digby Jones on employers' scepticism about vocational courses, Phil Willis MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, said: "Six years of empty Government proposals have developed the vocational route into little more than a smoke-screen"

"Vocational qualifications, properly managed, would help to create a well-rounded workforce, able to contribute to their employer's profitability."

"Employers have to ensure that the training provided is about improving skills and not purely covering health and safety issues. While companies should not be burdened by a training levy, employees need to be given statutory time off in order to gain training."
