Fuel Poverty Beckons In Light Of Price Rises

11.28.15am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 8th Sep 2004

Commenting on news that Npower, the UK's third largest energy firm, is to increase its gas and electricity prices, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "An investigation may be needed to determine whether these price increases are merited, or whether the energy companies are making unjustifiable links with oil and taking advantage of the visible movement of the market.

"The onus really is on the consumer to hunt out the best deals from electricity and gas suppliers.

"Nevertheless, with a rise in electricity and gas bills inevitable for millions of people, the Government may need to increase funding for schemes to tackle fuel poverty to pre-empt real hardship for vulnerable people."
