Tory Tax Cuts Are Empty Promises

11.19.00am GMT Tue 9th Nov 2004

Responding to the Conservatives' tax cutting consultation paper issued today, Dr Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said: "The Conservatives have spent their savings from the James Review a number of times, including promises for greater public spending on public services, cutting the budget deficit, and tax cuts.

"There is an implausible belief that vast savings can be made by getting rid of waste and bureaucracy rather than making tough choices.

"It's obvious that the Conservative Party believe they can't win the next General Election as they continue to make promises with money they don't have.

"Fairer taxation is a desirable aim but it is an empty promise unless clear costings of policies are published. This is something the Liberal Democrats have been happy to do."
