Christmas Strike Would Damage Royal Mail's Fight Back - Bruce

11.51.00am GMT Wed 10th Nov 2004

London could face a postal strike in the run up to Christmas. Members of the Communication and Workers Union (CWU) were balloted today on a vote to take industrial action over pay. Commenting on the news, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "If they are to pursue this strike they will halt the Royal Mail's fight back to recovery.

"This will probably provoke further fines for the company for missed performance targets.

"We had a costly unofficial strike in London last year which damaged the whole of the UK.

"It is incredible that a union should be planning a strike when the Royal Mail is coming under increased pressure from competition.

"If London postal workers do decide to strike, in the long-term, they will be putting their jobs on the line and prejudicing their own colleagues' chances of profit-sharing bonuses."
