Gordon Brown has ordered Whitehall departments to cut spending to keep council tax increases artificially low prior to the General Election.

Commenting on the news, Edward Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow to the ODPM, said: "Once again, the Treasury has had to screw money out of other departments to stave off rises in council tax.

"This proves just how scared Labour is of this disastrous tax.

"Council tax is in a permanent crisis. Pre-election papering over the cracks won't solve the problem of unfairness and unpopularity of this hated Tory tax.

"The voters want a solution to the council tax problem, and only the Liberal Democrats are offering one."
