11.17.00am GMT Tue 22nd Feb 2005

Commenting on claims made by Don Cruikshank that Treasury officials tried to stymie his report on the banking sector, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Dr Vince Cable MP, said: "I am have been calling for Government action on this report for a number of years.

"The Government has failed to follow up on its promises to reform the sector. Claims that Treasury officials have been suppressing the report are extremely worrying.

"It is high time that action is taken to tackle the 'excessive profits' highlighted within the Cruikshank report."
