Government Refuses to Promise Open EU Ministers Meetings - Huhne12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Jun 2005 Commenting on Jack Straw's refusal to confirm whether or not EU Ministerial meetings held during the British Presidency will be open to the press, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chief Secretary To The Treasury, Chris Huhne MP said: "Ministers like to talk about the EU being held to account, but it is essential that the people of Europe know what is being said and done in their name in the Council of Ministers. Without openness, there cannot be accountability. "The only two legislatures apart from the EU Council of Ministers that regularly meet in secret are those of Cuba and North Korea." "The Government should be helping the process of making the EU more democratic and accountable, not hindering it."
