Claimant count rise very disturbing - Cable

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 12th Oct 2005

Commenting on unemployment figures released today by the ONS which show that the claimant count has risen for the eighth month in succession, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said: "These figures are very disturbing. Growing levels of unemployment are likely to have a knock-on effect on consumer spending and the housing market.

"The UK economy is now growing well below the Chancellor's predictions and his continuing complacency is distressing.

"Today's figures continue the longest period of increasing unemployment in the last 12 years."
