Commenting on the publication of the report 'Releasing the resources to meet the challenges ahead', Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor said:

"This document was supposed to signal where tough choices were to be made in spending and the priorities for the next spending round. The Chancellor's failure to allow full debate of this important document in the chamber is a clear admission that it fails to deliver.

"Only when details are provided of where savings will be made and what the spending priorities will be for the review period can a serious debate take place.

"It would be interesting to hear whether the unions agree with the Chancellor that public sector pay can be restrained to inflation. His desire to control it is yet another example of his control-freakery.

"The failure to mention ID Cards in this document either indicates that this document's not worth the paper it's written on or that the Government are trying to row back from ID cards as fast as possible."
