Sunday trading decision welcome but small shops need more help - Davey

5.03.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 6th Jul 2006

Commenting on news that Sunday trading laws will not be changed, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Edward Davey MP said:

"Opinion was heavily against an increase in Sunday trading hours, and it's good that Ministers have at last admitted the inevitable.

"Yet this decision still leaves small shops on our high streets suffering from the unfair business rate system and from unfair competitive practices.

"Ministers must now address the rates issue, and the Office of Fair Trading must press on with its review of competition in the grocery and supermarket sector."
