Action needed over nuclear safety fears - Howarth

5.05.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 5th Jul 2006

Liberal Democrat Energy Spokesperson David Howarth MP is demanding an urgent explanation from the Department of Trade and Industry about the safety of Britain's nuclear power stations.

In response to reports that Government inspectors have serious concerns about ageing reactors, Mr Howarth has tabled two questions for the Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling.

Mr Howarth said:

"The evidence is mounting that the Government is taking a huge gamble by pushing for a new generation of nuclear power plants.

"Over-reliance on large, centralised and risky nuclear plants could seriously threaten our electricity supplies if one or more reactor is shut down due to these sort of safety concerns."
