Met police should do more on compensation claims - Cable

7.20.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 4th Jul 2006

Commenting on figures that show the Metropolitan Police is the slowest force in the country at responding to the Compensation Authority's requests for data, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and MP for Twickenham, Vincent Cable said:

"Victims, often having recently suffered in traumatic incidents, are applying for compensation in good faith.

"Whilst I appreciate that some complicated cases will take longer, the Met should be doing more to respond within a reasonable time. Either they regard it as a low priority or they are understaffed in this area.

"It has finally been recognised that the needs of victims have been neglected in the past and this is one of the areas where a significant difference to a victim's experience of the Criminal Justice system could be made."
