Commenting on news of the faltering WTO trade talks, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary Edward Davey MP, said:

"A year ago, the Prime Minister was promising to lead the fight against world poverty at Gleneagles, saying that trade was central to that vision. With the trade talks on the brink of failure, now is the time for Tony Blair to deliver on his claim to be a world statesman.

"The Prime Minister has close friends in the White House and in Brussels, with George Bush and Peter Mandelson. He had President Lula of Brazil on a state visit to the UK only three months ago. These are the three key decision-makers. If Tony Blair can't now deliver on such a crucial issue, after his boasts and when he holds all the aces, it really is time he left office."
