NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS FAILINGS OF PENSION REFORMS - LAWS

10.10.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 20th Jul 2006

Commenting on the release of the Pensions Policy Institute's evaluation of the Government's White Paper on Pensions reform, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, David Laws MP said:

"Not only will the Government proposals do little to help today's pensioners, but they fail to provide the solid foundation needed to get more people to make pension provisions of their own.

"The Government proposals fail to simplify our ludicrously complex pensions system and do not offer adequate funding for a decent state pension for all.

"There is massive confusion over how many people will still be subject to means testing under Government proposals. Millions of people will still be punished for saving, by having their state pension entitlement removed.

"As this report acknowledges, the Government's White Paper falls well short of a fairer, simpler and universal decent state pension, as proposed by the Liberal Democrats."
