BLAIR MUST SHARE BLAME ON FAILED TRADE TALKS - DAVEY3.15.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 24th Jul 2006
Commenting on the failure of the latest round of world trade talks, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Edward Davey MP said: "This is bad news for the world's poorest and the world economy. It shows a huge failure in political leadership. Only last year the rich nations were promising to 'Make Poverty History', and to work for a successful trade round. "Tony Blair himself must share the blame. With his two good friends, Peter Mandelson representing Europe and George Bush in charge of America, he was the one politician who should have bridged the gap, but he has failed." Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said: "It is a sad day when the need to win farm votes in the mid-term elections has prevented US action on this crucial trade round. "Developing countries are not asking for debt cancellation and aid, but for a fair chance to trade their way out of poverty."
