Commenting on the Office of National Statistics (ONS) letter, which has been sent to the Cabinet Secretary commenting on Tony Blair's early announcement of unemployment figures, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said: "It is worrying when a Prime Minister of almost 10 years doesn't understand the basic conventions of government. This is market sensitive information, which must be released on a carefully controlled basis.

"As it happens, on closer inspection his claim turns out to be false. Although there has been a fall in the number of people claiming unemployment benefit, the number of people out of work has continued to rise."
