Commenting on the Sage survey of business leaders highlighting the damaging effect of red tape on business, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Edward Davey MP said: "This report clearly demonstrates the damage done to our economy by excessive red tape.

"Coinciding with another report showing the UKs competitiveness sliding to 10th place in the world, it is now high time that the Government took action.

"Since coming to power, New Labour has created 592 new criminal offences for businesses alone and over 3,000 altogether.

"Deregulation, repealing unnecessary legislation and ensuring future laws are properly assessed and fit for purpose is now vital."
