Government Employment Strategy Unravelling - Cable

6.00.49pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Oct 2006

Responding to the news that unemployment has risen to a six year high, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP, said: "This is part of a trend which has been continuing for almost a year.

"With interest rates likely to rise further the prospects are that this problem will get worse in the short and medium term.

"Since the Government came into office, there has been a tripling of 16 and 17 year olds who are not in work or full-time education. The positive story about unemployment, which this Government successfully developed, is now seriously unravelling."
