Government Must Reform Telephone Preference Service - Burt

9.29.15pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 24th Oct 2006

Liberal Democrat Trade and Industry Spokesperson, Lorely Burt MP, has called on the Government to make the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) opt in, during a debate in Westminster Hall.

The Rising number of nuisance calls being received each year by British consumers prompted her call in a Parliamentary debate on the issue.

Mrs Burt said:

"12 million people have registered with the Telephone Preference Service so they do not receive unsolicited calls.

"Ofcom has failed to enforce government regulations on call centres. The Government should therefore change to a system where consumers opt into marketing calls rather than opting out.

"Telemarketing companies accept that this is coming but the Government has been far slower than its European counterparts in introducing this reform."
