OFWAT must protect consumers - Kramer

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th May 2007

Commenting on today's [Thursday] Public Accounts Committee report on OFWAT, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said: "Thames Water may have finally pulled its socks up, but all this shows is that stopping leaks was always possible.

"I suspect that if OFWAT had taken a tough stand earlier, this leakage problem could have been long solved, and we would never have lived with last year's water restrictions.

"Huge price rises for water are forecast in the next few years to meet EU standards, and in London to clean up the Thames. Customers will need protection.

"OFWAT must be the champion of the consumer and use its powers, rather than always giving water companies the benefit of the doubt."
