Channel 4 needs support now - Foster

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 1st May 2007

Liberal Democrat Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, Don Foster MP has called for Channel 4 to be given short-term assistance, following the news that its profits fell by 70 per cent last year.

He has also written to Ofcom's chief Executive, Ed Richards, urging research into the best way to ensure the channel's long-term future.

Commenting, Don Foster said:

"Channel 4 provides challenging programmes and keeps the BBC honest.

"Its future is key to providing choice for viewers, yet today's results hint that such a future is now precarious.

"The combination of an increasingly fragmented digital market and the downturn in advertising revenue means that short term financial assistance is needed now.

"That's why the Government must direct the BBC to give Channel 4 the funds it needs for switchover immediately."
