Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP

Commenting on today's [Friday] NAO report into simplifying tax returns, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said: "This report confirms that Gordon Brown is the mastermind of an overly complex and bureaucratic tax system.

"The best way to help people complete their tax returns is to simplify the tax system itself.

"However, despite repeated representations from pensioner and low pay groups, the Chancellor has done nothing to simplify the tax system.

"If the HMRC can't give correct and full advice, what hope is there for the public at large?

"While any steps taken by HMRC to help individuals are welcome, out of date advice, complex forms and complicated guidance notes are not helping."
