Gangmaster authority's powers should be widened - Kramer

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 26th Apr 2007

Commenting on the Government announcement of an investigation into the exploitation of migrant workers, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said: "Revelations about the exploitation of migrant workers are very worrying.

"The Government should widen the powers of the Gangmaster's Licensing Authority to include more industries, at the very least catering and construction.

"However, a licensing scheme will be worthless unless the authority has the human and financial resources to police it properly.

"There is growing evidence that many immigrants are not fully aware of their rights at work. The Government must ensure that all foreign workers know the law."
