British Gas complaints highlight need for watchdog - Kramer

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 20th Apr 2007

Commenting on the news that British Gas has seen a surge in complaints since it introduced a new billing system, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said: "These figures underscore how vital it is that a national watchdog supports people in getting their complaints sorted with companies like British Gas.

"Under Government plans to merge Energywatch into a National Consumer Council, thousands of bill payers will be told to sort these problems out with the company and to rely on a redress scheme if it doesn't work.

"Hopefully this report will make the Government rethink while it still has the chance to change the legislation and make sure that consumers are properly represented."
