Sellafield investigation must look at other nuclear facilities - Kramer

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Apr 2007

Commenting on the investigation into the removal of body samples from dead Sellafield employees in the 1960s and 1970s, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Susan Kramer MP said: "It is vital that we know why these samples were taken and what, if anything, was discovered.

"We welcome the inquiry into these known cases in Sellafield, but the Government should now initiate a broader investigation into other existing and decommissioned nuclear facilities where other similar practices may have taken place.

"The families of workers at other nuclear facilities will be looking for reassurance about this deeply disturbing revelation.

"It seems extraordinary that following the Alder Hey investigation just a few years ago, organisations like BNFL did not bring these issues to light much earlier. It only tells us that secrecy is endemic in this industry.

"If the nuclear industry wasn't open and honest with the British public then, why should we think things are any different now?"
