Cross-party action on pensions compensation needed - Laws

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Apr 2007

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Third Reading of the Pensions Bill, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, David Laws MP said: "The Pensions Bill gives the House of Commons the chance to impose on the Government the fair settlement on pensions compensation which it has for so long resisted.

"I hope that MPs of all parties will back the amendments which will guarantee that those who lost their occupational pensions receive fair compensation at the same level as the Pension Protection Fund.

"The Government has consistently been found to be guilty of maladministration, yet it has had to be dragged kicking and screaming towards a proper package of compensation.

"This week MPs have their best opportunity to date to end this long-running farce. Those who have lost their pensions will not forgive MPs who do not back a fair compensation package."
