Corporate Manslaughter Must Cover Public Institutions - Lord Lee

4.43.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 22nd May 2007

The Government was defeated today in the House of Lords in its attempts to exclude deaths in custody from the Corporate Manslaughter Bill.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Trade and Industry Spokesperson, Lord (John) Lee said:

"I welcome today's vote. I hope that the Government starts to listen soon about this important piece of legislation.

"The Government must allow deaths in custody to be covered by this Bill now, rather than holding out the promise of allowing deaths in custody to be covered at some point in the future.

"We will continue to fight for this principle for as long as this Bill is before Parliament."
