3.05.03pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 14th Jun 2007

Commenting on today's [Thursday] Public Accounts Committee report criticising the cost overruns on the West Coast Main Line upgrade, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said: "The best way to ensure that taxpayers' money is spent efficiently is to allow Network Rail to get on with its job without constant Government interference.

"The long-term answer to increasing Britain's rail capacity must be to build dedicated high-speed rail lines."
