Treaty Must Not Undermine Single Market - Cable

5.25.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 22nd Jun 2007

Commenting on reports that Tony Blair has agreed to French demands for changes to the wording on competition in the preamble to the proposed new EU treaty, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said: "Tony Blair appears to have taken his eye off the ball. Whilst he is preoccupied with his so-called red lines he is in danger of making unwelcome concessions to protectionism.

"One of the great achievements of the EU is to have created a genuinely competitive single market with strict rules on competition and state aid.

"Such a change would send a damaging signal that the EU is not serious about tackling protectionism. The substantive elements of the treaty must remain committed to a firm competition policy and a level playing field for business in Europe."
