Commenting on today's report from Sheffield University, which finds that the number of businesses starting up across the UK has fallen since 1997, Liberal Democrat Shadow Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Secretary, Lembit Öpik MP said: "These results contradict Labour's own claims about encouraging small business in Britain. Unnecessary regulation is stifling Britain's entrepreneurial spirit, as any small trader will confirm.

"The Liberal Democrats are already working with the Federation of Small Businesses and others to help reduce the huge weight of regulation.

"The Government should reform business tax to ensure small businesses are better able to succeed in the future.

"Unless the Government acts, ministers will continue to preside over the decline of entrepreneurialism in the United Kingdom."
