Mobile phone safety report should reassure public - Harris4.21.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 12th Sep 2007 Commenting on today's report from the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Programme including research on the safety of mobile phones, Liberal Democrat Science Spokesperson, Dr Evan Harris MP said: "This report is good news for the public, phone users and the industry. "There is no basis on health grounds for any further tightening of regulations or advice on mobile phone masts or the use of handsets. "The current precautionary approach - involving limited restrictions on erecting mobile phone masts near schools and advice about limiting use by young children - is reasonable and this research demonstrates that there is as yet no justification for a more restrictive approach. "It is impossible to say that mobile phone technology is entirely safe, but this research suggests that there are no adverse health effects or that such effects are only very small or very long-term. The report is right to call for further research to alleviate public concern. "Some campaign groups believe that mobile phones damage health, and will not be persuaded whatever scientists say, but the general public should be reassured."
