Matthew Taylor MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, responding to the latest retail sales figures from the CBI that showed sales growing at the fastest rate since 2002, said: "Following record borrowing figures, it is not surprising to see people spending their newly borrowed money." "But a boom on the high street won't make up for the bust in manufacturing." "Spending financed by debt can't rescue Gordon Brown in the long run."
