Royal Mail Must Set Out Criteria For Post Office Closure Decisions

6.26.00am GMT Mon 1st Nov 2004

Commenting on the news that half of all Crown post offices could be closed or sold off under plans being considered by the Royal Mail, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "We need to know under what criteria Royal Mail would close these offices - those that have the lowest business value, those that provide the least in terms of community service, or those with the greatest commercial value when sold.

"This move suggests that Royal Mail don't have confidence in the high street business.

"This will further dishearten those Sub-Postmasters and Sub-Postmistresses across the country who are trying to keep their businesses afloat despite a downturn in income caused by recent Government policies."
